The seed is contained in the kidney shaped nuts grown at the bottom of cashew fruit (apple). The seed, its shell and the fruit have many uses. The shell for example has uses in the production of lubricants, paints and water proofing. The fruit can be fermented into fruit drinks and liquor. The cashew tree is native to Brazil, and the cultivation spread to India and eventually Southeast Asia and Africa. India and Vietnam are major processors of raw cashew nut and exporters of Cashew kernels around the globe. The largest cashew tree in the world is located in Natal, Brazil covering an area of around 7,500 m2 (81,000 sq ft)
Processing
Immediately after harvest, raw cashews nuts are processed, which is fundamental to maintain their quality and properties. Farmers separate the drupe from the cashew apple to put them into sun-drying. These raw products are traded and then processed to obtain the cashew nut kernel.
